PUDUCHERRY: A group of Tamil lovers celebrated the
2872nd birth anniversary of Tholkappiyar, the author of Tamil grammar.
"Tholkappiyar, the disciple of Agasthya, was born
on May 1 in the Tamil month of Chitirai on a pournami day in 865 BC. He was
said to have been born in an agrarian family in Adankodu village in Vilavankodu
taluk in Kanyakumari district. There are references to this in his work,
Tholkapiyam," explained R. Madhivanan, former Director, Tamil Etymological
Dictionary Project of Government of Tamil Nadu.
He was speaking at a function organised by the Dravida
Peravai. He further explained that since Agathiam, the grammar compiled by
Agastya, went missing after the great deluge, Tholkappiyar was asked to compile
Tamil grammar.
A book titled "Tholkappiyar Kaalam", written
by Dr. Madhivanan, was released on the occasion. A. Arivunambi, dean,
Subramania Bharathy School of Tamil Studies of Pondicherry University, who
reviewed the book, said it threw new light on the period in which Tholkappiyar lived.
Dravida Peravai General Secretary N. Nandhivarman
urged the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to celebrate the birth
anniversary of Tholkappiyar on May 1. He also urged the Central Government to
bring out a postal stamp of the grammarian on May 1, 2008. He said the Tamil
Nadu Government must make arrangements to e-publish all Tamil dictionaries and
thesauruses known as "Nigandu".
He said the Dravida Peravai planned to organise
Silapathigaram Vizha, Manimegalai, Jeevakasinthamani, Ravana Kavyam and Naladiyar
Vizha to popularise the works.
