RESEARCH PAPERS ON TAMIL CIVILIZATION AND HISTORY : N.NANDHIVARMAN

Dear friends forever

I am an half baked politician driven by love for Tamil who started writing at the age of 14 but most of my earlier writings which appeared up to 1977 is lost to the ravages of time. Dr.P.Marudhanayagam my role model to act as scholar first recognized the sprit within me. Bi-lingual expressions created the impression in him and when known that both share same date and month in our birth chart, which he wrote in a book gifted to me, our bonds of fraternity grew.

Late Dr.S.V.Narayanan Dean of School of Management of Pondicherry University in beginning of this millennium asked me to address students of his school on Problems Facing the Nation and its Resolution and my extempore speech in English lasted 3 hours 30 minutes even after college hours. I do not hold a Doctorate, but the International Institute of Tamil Studies in the invitation of my book release and an Endowment Lecture inscribed my name as Dr.N.Nandhivarman. I had to apologetically say I am Munaippu Ullavar so they printed as Munaivar.

Dr.D.Sambandam Dean of the School of International Studies while I presented a paper in a symposium called me Doctor of Doctors. He knows that I am working on a Book on Economics which has updating Marx and Futurist Economy as its goal.

Dr.Era.Madhivanan who presided over the function at International Institute of Tamil Studies on the occasion of my book release titled Kadaladiyil Thamizhar Nagareegam , after hearing and viewing my power point presentation in his address said for this speech itself a Doctorate could be conferred on Nandhivarman.

My public life and private life are open to public and is in public domain preserved in Nation Archives of Government of India at Pondicherry , this was submitted on the eve of myself becoming a retired politician.

But to scholarly world who do not know who is this Jack of all Trades and Master of none, to introduce me this E-Book would act as Seettukkavi.

With this I am troubling you by sending this E-Book as attachment. Just like marketing of products this is not an exercise in marketing myself.

The INITIATIVES on NEW RESEARCH THEMES suggested here and there in the pages of this E Book may trigger your thought to carry forward some initiatives through various scholars and various Universities, after all proving Tamils Antiquity and forging Tamil Scholar Unity is a goal which eludes reach in our life time..

With Regards
Yours sincerely
N.Nandhivarman

UNCLE POLITICIAN ......... SO MY SISTERS DAUGHTERS MET POLITICIANS IN CHILDHOOD

Kayalvizhi is a constant critic of mine. Every year she presents a new diary with her advice for the year. Some years ago she wrote : Solve the problems of others, Don't be problem to others. This example indicates how she takes liberty to criticize her uncle. At the time of Tsunami she wrote a poem.

HELP THOSE WHO ARE ALIVE

We are like flowers blooming every day
December 26 th was the tsunami day
Tsunami waves gave shock to everyone
But let us not give shock to anyone
Be calm and show warmth and be kind
Let no tsunami wave be in mind
Those alive help living flowers
Giving everything as showers
Love for human beings must bloom
Let us all overcome this doom.

Comrade George Fernandes, Thiru. Vaiko, Thiru.K.Veeramani,Thiru.G.Viswanathan, Dr.Subramanianswamy,Thiru.Pa.Nedumaran and all those who visited Dravida Peravai know Kanimozhi and Kayalvizhi are my source of inspiration.

But they are not readied for nurturing dynastic politics. In fact from childhood Kanimozhi and me disagree and debate religion. Kanimozhi vowed to change me, neither could she win nor I could change her. Kayalvizhi is gaining recognition as dancer and poet. They will go in their own way. I will carry on my crusade against religion till my life lasts upholding rationalism.

POETS PROTEST TO AWAKEN OUR TAMIL MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT :2002

POETS MEET TO AWAKEN MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT FROM SLUMBER

A novel kind of protest by the Poets and Tamil scholars of Pondicherry disturbed the lethargy of our political class and it left an imprint on Tami lhistory pointing an accusing finger at the Parliament Members of Tamil Nadu, with an exception of a few, for their utter failure to stand united on the issues pertaining to Tamil Nadu in the floor of the Parliament. This protest also charged the political parties for not giving a free hand to the members of parliament to raise issues of concern to Tamil Nadu and also had a dig at the parties for not choosing competent persons to represent their constituencies.

The poets of Pondicherry were brought under an umbrella to air their poems in a THERU MUNAITHIRUPALLI EZHUCCHI organized jointly by a political party Dravida Peravai and a Tamil association namely Senthamizhar Iyakkam.

Thirupalli Ezhucchi , in Tamil is a poetic form which was used by devout followers to awaken their favorite god or goddess from slumber. Saint Andal's Thiruppavai falls under this category. Today poet after poet used this form to awaken the parliamentarians and political parties and urged them to stand united on issues like Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu. Poets in their poems condemned the saffronization of the education and the deletion of the word "Dravida" from the text books published by NCERT and also the suppression of the history of Chera, Chola, Pandian and Sathavahana rule. The poets also condemned the attempt in these text books to describe the Bolshevik revolution as a "Coup led by Lenin". The poets also condemned the downsizing of the Sethu Canal project, which according to the Union Minister for Shipping Ved Prakash Goel is going to be a mini-canal at a cost of 200 croes and completable in a years time.

The uncertainty of the lives of plantation labour in Srilanka, whose fate remains still unsettled decades after Srimavo-Sastri pact was signed also found mention in these poems.

Dravida Peravai General Secretary N.Nandhivarman, Tamil Valarchi Nadavadikkai Kuzhu President Dr.Era.Tirumurugan,Bi- Lingual Poet Professor M.Lenin Tangappa, Senthamizhar Iyakkam President N.M.Tamizhmani, Poets Pugazenthi, Ramakrishna Bharathi, Poongunran, Janakiraman, PattaringnarIlakkiyan, Thamiziyakkan, Veera.Madurakavi, Professor Sambandam, Reader of the International School of Economics Pondicherry University etc were the notable poets who participated in this STREET CORNER POETS MEET (Therumunai Pattarangu) which is for

TAMIZHAR KATCHIGALUKKU TIRUPALLI EZHUCCHI.

Speaking at the meet N.Nandhivarman said that Pondicherry assembly in order to fulfill the legal requirements had met for two days and had deliberated for 3 hours and 6 minutes in these two days. It is high time that hourly pay is fixed for our legislators, and compulsory attendance insisted for our parliamentarians to get their salary. Otherwise they have no right to claim salary while they commit dereliction of duty by not attending sessions and not

airing peoples concerns. In a joking manner he said that if he is made ORU NAAL MUDALVAR AS IN CINEMA MUDALVAN, his first order will be cancellation of the order that waived 60 crores to two distilleries. His next order will be to arrest the 26 absconders who had taken 487 crores from various financial institutions in Pondicherry and had vanished. By this two orders all monetary demands of various people agitating for various reasons could be met.

This novel protest is a warning to all Parliamentarians in this country. People may demand right to recall as the last option, if such protests fail to awaken the political class.

DRAVIDA PERAVAI : ITS POLICIES :CODE OF CONDUCT

“A world without beggar’s outstretched palm, the miser’s heartless stony stare, the piteous wail of want, the pallid face of crime, the livid lips of lies, the cruel eyes of scorn, a race without disease of flesh or brain, A land where life lengthens, fear dies, joy deepens, love intensifies and man regains his dignity, is what Aringnar Anna dreamt of and Annaism stands for” says the party manifesto. AringnarAnna, the founder of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, parent party of Dravida Peravai, spoke about the ideals while delivering the convocation address in Annamalai University. Those words were chosen to describe Annaism, as a socialist ideology suitable to Indian soil.

[Date of Formation: 15.02.1996. Registration with Election Commission of India 25.10.1996.]

DRAVIDA PERAVAIthe offshoot of DRAVIDA MUNNETRAKAZHAGAM is born out of historical necessity to mould the policies in tune with the changing needsof times and to catch the imagination of the Tamil people in the dawn of the next millenium. Nowhere in human society people were compartmentalized into castes in the name of religion by the invaders and kept under captivity for centuries together. The archaeological excavations at Mohenjadaro and Harappa bySirJohn Marshall brought to the fore the rich civilization of Dravidians. Dr.Caldwell's Comparative Grammar of DravidianLanguages highlighted that Tamil is the Mother of Dravidian language school and a primary classical language of the world. At the same time the oppressed sections of society revolted against caste tyranny. In such a compelling historical moment AdvocateJOHN RATHINAM, a leader of dalits founded Dravida Kazhagam in 1892. With an interval of some years after that first abortive attempt, the SouthIndian Welfare and Rights Movement otherwise known as Justice Party emerged in the scene in 1916. As moderates in Justice Party were applying brakes for the onward march of the social revolution initiated by PERIYAR E.V.RAMASAMY, a new transformation was carried forward by DRAVIDA KAZHAGAM.

The realization that social revolution sans power will not deliver goods led to the birth of DRAVIDA MUNNETRA KAZHAGAM in September 17/1949. ARINGNAR ANNA led the party to citadels of power in 1967 but his demise orphaned the movement. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam led by Aringnar Anna's successor Dr. KALAIGNAR M. KARUNANITHI bacame a victim of the evil designs of Indian National Congress, the power crazy fascist party, which engineered splits in opposition parties to enable it to remain in the saddle at the Central Government of India. A matinee idol became a convenient tool to reverse the march of the rationalist movement and the historical resurgence of the Dravidian Peoples. ANNA DRAVIDA MUNNETRA KAZHAGAMcame into existence in October 1972. Once again DRAVIDA MUNNETRA KAZHAGAM split and MARUMALARCHI DRAVIDA MUNNETRA KAZHGAM was formed due to personality clashes. Aghast at thedivision after division that buried all the achievement of century old Dravidian movement an outfit DRAVIDA ILAIGNAR PERVAIaimed at unifying the youth divided between the three Dravidian parties emerged on 25th January 1994 in front of the statue of Student leader Rajendran of Annamalai University who lost his life to the bullets of police during Anti-Hindi agitation of 1965. N. GREATEST BARD BHARATHIAR : N.NANDHIVARMAN

THE GREATEST BARD OF TAMIL BHARATHIAR

N.Nandhivarman

The 83 rd anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiar falls on September 11 of 2004  The Bharathiar Memorial Museum was set up by the Government of Pondicherry in 1972. In 1984 it was converted into a research center to which from all over the world people have come. The Government of Pondicherry headed by then Chief Minister D.Ramachandiran had brought out a beautiful book in French in 1982, which contains translations of Bharathiar’s poems, prose and English articles. Such laudable exercises must be continued by successive governments to foster French and Tamil cultural exchanges by translating literatures belonging to both languages. But during his lifetime Bharathiar had struggled to bring out his works in print.

The ordeals of Poets in the colonial era to see their masterpieces in print could be easily understood by a letter through which Mahakavi Bharathiar sought financial support from his well wishers. In an open appeal written in 1921, the Great Bard of Tamil Renaissance states, “All of my manuscripts, accumulated labour of my 12 year exile have arrived here from Pondicherry. They are to be divided into 40 separate books. Most of my works which I have selected for publication are prose, stories, sensational at the same time classical, very easy, lucid, clear, luminous and all but too popular in style and diction and at the same time chaste, pure, correct, epic and time defying.” By this appeal the Poet not only exudes confidence in his creative literature and its contents but also is convinced that he is standing at the cross roads of critical times and is destined to play a crucial role. His words further down in the same appeal will be enough to portray the missionary zeal that burnt in him. “The historic necessity of my works for the uplift of the Tamil Land which again is a sheer necessity of the inevitable, imminent and heaven-ordained revival of the East”, says Mahakavi. These words  firmly reflects the inner feelings of the most enlightened Tamil mind of our times, which was destined to leave an everlasting impact on the Tamil society.

Stands Apart :The Poet’s vision was clear and he pursued his life’s mission with all his inherent strength, doing what was destined to be done. He wrote a satirical story “ The Fox with a Golden Tail”, which was published in 1914. It should also be mentioned that Aurobindo Ghosh lauded the flowery language of Bharathiar in that story. Dr.Nanjunda Rao of Chennai who was immensely pleased ordered for 500 copies and many letters of appreciation poured in from all quarters. Kuvalai Kannan read those letters to Bharathiar hoping he would be pleased. But Bharathiar stated as follows: “ Using my brain to its fullest capacity while I write in my mother tongue Panchali Sabadam, you alone read it, whereas if it is in English our men who are slaves to English colonial culture order for copies after copies”, the poet retorted with contempt records R.A.Padmanabhan in Chitra Bharathi, a compilations of pictures and historical notes on Bharathiar.
Tamil Medium
At that point of time when all men of letters under colonial rule were crazy over the proficiency in the tongue of the ruling classes, Bharathiar stands apart as a champion of the Tamil cause. In his book Essays and Other Prose Fragments published in 1937 writing under the title “ Vernaculars” Bharathiar extends support to the Tamil medium of instruction in the schools of Education.

Let me reproduce his views in verbatim:  “ I do not blame the Madras Council of Indian education for their anxiety to have Professor Geddes’ views on the subject of employing Indian languages as media of instruction in Indian schools. For I am aware those men’s thoughts are ordinarily moulded by their environments. Nor do I blame the good and learned Professor Geddes for his innocent comparison of the revival of Indian languages with the Gaelic revival in Wales and in Ireland. I do not know if Gaelic has any extensive and living literature. But I feel it is high time to remind all parties concerned, in the discussions like this, that most of the Indian languages have great, historic and living literatures. Of course their luster has been slightly dimmed by economic conditions during these later days. The English educated minority in this country can be pardoned for being frightfully ignorant of the higher phases of our national literatures, but they will well do to drop that annoying attitude of patronage and condescension when writing and talking about our languages. The Tamil language for instance has a living philosophical and poetical literature that is far grander, to my mind, than that of the vernacular of England. For the matter of that, I do not think that any modern vernacular of Europe can boast of works like Kural of Valluvar…” so goes on the Great Bard. This quality and courage of conviction is rare among the educated of his times and even today the ignorance of the educated towards the grandeur of the Tamil language and their wild goose chase of the foreign language continues unabated even after the wise counsel by Bharathiar.

The themes : His book Essays and Prose Fragments contains the following topics 1) To the being of the Universe 2) The Service of God 3) The Siddha and the Superman 4) Immortality 5) Fatalism 6) The Dawn 7) Rasa- The Keyword of Indian Culture 8) Blunting the Imagination 9) The Crime of Caste 10) The Place of Women 11) Women’s Freedom 12) Love and Marriage 13) Patriotism and Religious Differences 14) The National Congress 15) New Birth 16) Matri Puja 17) India and the World 18) In Memoriam 19) The Coming Age 20) Reflections 21) Some Political Maxims 22) Free Speech 23) India and war 24) Nammalvar 25) Andal 26) Rights and Duties 27) Vernaculars 28) The occult element in Tamil speech. The list of the essays will reveal the subjects that were near and dear to his heart.

Feminism Of particular mention is his voice for the cause of feminism. Speaking about the greatness of womanhood the Poet stands apart with no sign of male chauvinism, a characteristic flaw that causes even today gender bias and female infanticide. Let me quote him “ But if woman has always been the civiliser and, therefore, the spiritual superior of man, why did she get enslaved at all? For it is not only among Indians but also among the European and the Chinese and the Japanese and the Hottentots as, indeed all brutes and birds and insects, that the female has been content, till now, to occupy an enslaved, or if you please, a subordinate place to the male.” There cannot be a champion of the cause of feminism than Mahakavi Bharathiar in that point of time in the history of Tamils. A forerunner for the cause of feminism he had left his imprint by way of many articles and poems.

Crusader against Caste : Bharathi describes caste as a crime against humanity and let us know his feelings well expressed in his own style “ You sometimes quote ethnology, eugenics, hydrostatics and what not, to support these four thousand castes! But, alas, the ignorant masses of our country have been made to believe that this caste chaos is a special divine gift to our country and whoever transgresses it has to go to Hell. It is this belief more than anything else that makes people insensible to the injurious results of caste. If you really have your justification in ethnology or hydrostatics, then you have been cheating people during all these centuries by telling them a different story. No science can justify cheating”. The scientific temper, which the poet possesses, is what anyone who cares for fellow beings will want to inculcate in a caste- ridden society. The Poets are conscience keepers of their culture and the society in which they hail, and in unmistaken terms Bharathiar registers his voice of protest against the caste-infected society.

Spreading his message globally :

Bharathiar’s Tamil poems translated in many languages have established his greatness beyond an iota of doubt, at the same time very few attention is shown towards his writings in English, and it is high time his scholarly opinion on contemporary issues be understood. The Hindu in its sub-editorial dated 12 th September 1921 records the demise of this great poet thus: “ We regret to learn the death of Varakavi Subramanya Bharathi at his residence in Triplicane last night. The deceased was an ardent nationalist, a great thinker, a shining speaker and a powerful writer. He is the author of number of Tamil works including National songs. His recitation of the national songs infused genuine patriotism in the hearts of his listeners. He, like many other patriots of India, was an exile in Pondicherry for some years, because his patriotic speeches did not please the Gods in power. He has for some time past been ailing and by his premature death the country has lost a born poet and a sincere patriot. Swadesamithran too paid tributes in its editorial. But it is a sad fact that only handfuls were present when his body was cremated. Let us learn to respect great men when they are alive and be grateful for the great bards who uphold our culture universally.
